About the Project

About us

The departments of sociology and social work at National Taipei University have long been invested in youth-related research. We are particularly interested in how the current social system and ongoing social changes affect the life course of Taiwanese youth, with an emphasis on themes such as the changes in our educational system, the evolvement of the digital society, and how increased accessibility of social participation might alter one’s trajectory in life. In addition, our research team has also been long devoted to investigating the social integration of disabled youth, as well as the institutional factors that may influence their adjustment within said process, and propose possible alternatives or amendments.

About the NTPU Flagship Project

The Ministry of Education’s flagship project initiative aims to develop and promote featured areas of research of humanity and social science departments within higher-educational institutions, with the establishment of a speciality research centre as the long-term goal. Through this project, the departments of sociology and social work at National Taipei University hopes to establish a research centre for youth development in order to further pursue youth-related studies, cultivate the next generation of researchers and facilitate dialogue between academic organisations focused on youth development both domestically and worldwide.

Realising the Flagship Project

Under the framework of youth development, the research team will explore these four interconnected subjects: one, challenges and opportunities of youth in the digital age. Whilst the digitisation of everyday life brings about convenience and possibility, the “digital natives” that are the Taiwanese youth also face unique obstacles because of it. This particular study explores the internet’s risk factors (such as online bullying and online friendships), and its possibilities (such as food delivery platforms, digital capital and its disparities). Two, the effects of the educational system on youth development. Continued reformation of the educational system has altered the way the youth may seek to achieve human capital, and how they relate education and career. This study investigates the matter of fairness in current reforms of admission to higher educational institutions, and youth access to education in general. Three, demonstration of youth agency. Social participation amongst the youth is an exigent issue, and this study examines means of citizen participation offered to the youth by the public sector, alongside their demonstration of social concern via NGOs and NPOs in the private sector. Additionally, Unconventional employment, NEETs, and the working poor are also examined as the other side of youth social participation. And four, social support for disabled youth: with the government’s ongoing promotion of CRPD (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities), this study carries on the necessary discussion regarding social support for disabled youth with focuses on these themes: disabled youths’ right to education, right to employment and right to medical care, and the implementations to ensure social support within these processes.
