Digital Challenges of the Youth

The main focus of this research division is to investigate the challenges and opportunities faced by Taiwanese youth in the digital age. The current generation of youth grew up in an environment where the internet is easily accessible and are familiar with the use of electronic products, with most facets of their daily lives inseparable from technology. They can thus be called the “digital natives”. Upon this foundation, this research division hopes to aid future policymaking with their findings on the unique challenges of today’s youth, by focusing on these three themes: digital inequality, social and romantic relationships online, new employment opportunities in the digital age.

Youth and Educational Reforms

This research division is focused on how reforms to the Taiwanese educational system affects the learning results of the youth, and how that may in turn affect their school to work transition and social participation. Additionally, to better examine educational inequality and the effect of non-traditional admission to educational settings, this division works closely with the non-governmental organisation TFT (Teach for Taiwan). Via investigations of rural elementary schools, the impact of university admissions reform, and comparing the experiences of education in Europe, this research division hopes to better understand the challenges faced by the contemporary educational system, and provide results in aid of future policymaking.

Youth and Social Participation

With youth agency and social participation at the forefront, the research division follows the characteristics of agency in the current generation of Taiwanese youth, as well as the unique opportunities and limitations they may face, especially in terms of their social participation, employment, and entrepreneurship. This includes the various pathways of school to work transitioning; the institutional environments and struggles of value-orientated, youth-found organisations; subsequent employment of youth involved in deliberative democracy; and finally, to cultivate pragmatic youth involvement in the diverse issues of Taiwanese communities, via deliberative means and public participation.

Youth and Social Inclusion

Social Inclusion is the main theme of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. We believe that disability is an inevitable stage of life experienced by us all at various points in life. The social inclusion of people with disabilities is indispensable in a diverse society, and to promote it has great value in the improvement and development of society at large. Previous research regarding disabilities primarily focused on early intervention, medical treatment, therapy, and care; we believe that the development of disabled youth is essential to social inclusion, and that only by removing obstacles that prevent social participation of people with disabilities, may we promote development of disabled youth and achieve sustainable social inclusion. In particular, we follow disabled youth in the university environment, including: their support systems, their independence, inclusion-related education in the classroom and its results, experiences of students with hidden disabilities, and the outcomes of disabled students after graduation. This research division hopes that their findings may reinforce social inclusion of disabled youth, and promote sustainable development of society overall.

Career Development

This research division is focused on exploring the contemporary situation of marriage, childbirth, and employment among Taiwanese youth. With the expansion of higher education and changes in Taiwan's industrial structure, issues such as high youth unemployment rates and low youth wages continue to emerge in literature and policies. The impact on career development also results in delaying the transition of individual life stages, including the postponement and alteration of the marriage and childbirth process. Employment issues for Taiwanese youth encompass topics such as the transition from school to work, the influence of employment types on careers, and the adaptation of unemployed or marginally employed youth to life. The research findings of this group will contribute to the formulation of youth development policies at various government levels.
